The three handwritten parts belonging to the Hessian State and University Library Darmstadt contain some interesting details of performance practice: for instance, the numerous dynamic markings in the bass part are supplemented by the indications 'solo' and 'tutti', suggesting to have only the bassoon or the left hand at the harpsichord play the piano passages, in order to attain additional nuances of colour. In addition, the slurs that often begin on the upbeat give an individual pronunciation; one should observe these slurs exactly. In bar 14/15 of the second movement the source contains several misreadings that were easily corrected by comparison with the parallel bars 34/35. The realisation of the unfigured bass may serve as an inspiration for an accompaniment using dynamics and accents. Praise is now to the great master Fasch, whose impressive compositional output, unpublished during his lifetime, is gradually being 'discovered'. His instrumental pieces reveal an outstanding master of counterpoint; still rooted in the baroque tradition, they are however works of transition that, without renouncing polyphonic writing, prefigure the musical style of the rococo period. As if aiming to supply the traditional world of form with new contents in new guises, the motives of the 'old style' switch to thematically articulated melodic sections, which anticipate the string setting of the classical orchestra. This is obvious in his chamber music, where transparency and avoidance of continuo-linked fill-in parts pave the way to the string quartet. Hurrying ahead of the taste of his time, Fasch uses canonic rigour while letting the ornamentation of the melodic idea take its course; he thereby becomes one of the decisive pioneers of new music.
