Giovanni Avolio, conductor and composer, was born in 1849 in Naples. Amongst others, he conducted the orchestras in Parma and Constantinople. Well known is his opera - a lyrical comedy - Rosetta la Giardiniera a three act piece from 1872. Amongst his more than 100 compositions are operas, cantatas, piano works, chamber music and opera arrangements (works by Puccini, Verdi, Ponchielli, etc.) for piano trios or various other ensembles. The date and place of his death is 1936 in Brendisi, although other sources give the years 1923 or 1937. In the late 18th to mid 19th century arrangements of popular classical opera literature for small chamber music ensembles was a common way of making these works accessible to a wider audience. Many instrumentalists, but also eminent composers, have adopted this genre - from the piano fantasies to the Italian banda. Verdi's penultimate opera Otello, based on the libretto by Arrigo Boito and William Shakspeare's drama of the same name, premiered in 1887 at La Scala in Milan. One year after its premiere Giovanni Avolio wrote Souvenir del'Opéra Otello for piano trio. The first edition, published by G. Ricordi, served as the basis for this arrangement.
