Productomschrijving
Jan Willem Frans Brandts Buys, the descendant of a long line of organists, was born in Zutphen in 1868. His great-grandfather, Cornelis Buys (1757 - 1831), was organist in Kampen and Zaltbommel. His grandfather, Cornelis Alijander Brandts Buys (1812 - 1890) was organist of the 'Grote of St. Lebuïnuskerk' in Deventer. His father, Marius Adrianus (1840 - 1911), was carillon player and City Music Master in Zutphen as well as organist of the 'Grote of St. Walburgiskerk' in Zutphen. Jan Brandts Buys was organist of the Broederenkerk in Zutphen from 1884 until 1889, in which year he left the Netherlands. He received his first lessons from his father. From 1889 he studied in Frankfurt / Main, Germany. In 1892 he settled, as a composer, in Vienna. From 1928 Brandts Buys lived in Salzburg, where he died the on the 7 th of December 1933. The present 'Toccate en Fuge' in g minor dates from 1891. It was published by his father in an album of Dutch organ music. At the end of this piece we find a footnote with the following remark: "In case this piece is played without use of the pedals, then one has to omit the notes put between brackets. In that case the pedal notes have to be played with the left hand (...)." In order to facilitate reading, this Toccate and Fuge is printed twice, once with the pedal part and once in a manualiter version.
