Productomschrijving

In 1967 Richard Flury wrote his last chamber music composition, the Trio for 2 Violins and Viola. His son Urs Joseph Flury describes the genesis of the work affectionately: Its probable cause was the occasional absence of our cellist Jost Meier, with whom my parents and I had for many years made up a string quartet, in which my father participated as a violist. For the summer vacation in 1967 we were invited by a childhood friend of my father’s, the widow of the founder of the Ringier publishing company, to spend in her villa in Meggen, where we played every morning. So also on the Swiss National Holiday on the first of August, when the trio had its private premiere on a porch above Lake Lucerne. Out of gratitude for the wonderful vacation my father dedicated the work to the hostess. Richard Flury was born in Biberist on 26 March 1896. After the Gymnasium in Solothurn, he studied musicology, sities of Berne,BasleandGeneva.Healsoattendedthe conservatories of these cities as a violin pupil of Fritz Hirt, Alphonse Brun and Paul Miche. Other teachers were Hans Huber and Joseph Marx (composition), Ernst Kurth (counter- point) and Joseph Lauber (instrumentation). Flury subsequently taught violin at the Solothurn Music School and Cantonal School. For thirty years he conducted the Solothurn City Orchestra, and for several years the Academic Orchestra in Zurich, as well as the mixed choir “Harmony” in Berne. Richard Flury died in Biberist on 23 December 1967. His works are held in Solothurn’s Central Library. As a composer, Flury belonged to the late romantic tradition, and wished for new thoughts within the tonal framework. To him, music was the language of feeling and therefore a romantic skill, far from the purely constructive. While his compositions often show a strongly contrapuntal thematic treatment, this happens organically and flows from within. His transparently and imagi- natively scored orchestral works are harmonically interesting, often with impressionistic traits that sometimes explore the frontiers of tonality. Flury addressed every musical genre. His output includes four operas, sacred and secular vocal music, 5 symphonies, ouvertures, 2 piano concertos, 4 violin concertos, songs and piano music. In addition to the octet and the nonet he also left chamber musicians violin solos and duos, 11 violin sonatas, 3 cello sonatas, 2 piano trios, a clarinet trio, 2 string trios, 7 string quartets, a quartet for 4 horns, a piano quartet and a piano quintet.
