Productomschrijving

Julius Röntgen's impressive output, extensive and demanding, is now cultivated by only a few music lovers, who particularly admire his inspiring chamber music, rich in melodic and rhythmic structure; rooted in the legacy of Schumann and Brahms, it soon developed its own individual idiom and harmonic 'weave'. This is also evidenced in the Trio for flute, oboe and bassoon op.86, whose thematic concentration and playful elegance will captivate all players.

We present it according to the first print of the parts, which appeared in 1931 from Amsterdam publisher G. Alsbach. Julius Röntgen was born in Leipzig on 9th May 1855, the son of Gewandhaus concertmaster Engelbert Röntgen. Through his mother Pauline, a pianist, the family was related to the respected Klengel musical dynasty. He was home taught, in music by his parents and in general subjects by tutors. Carl Reinecke gave him his first piano lessons. In 1870 he visited Franz Liszt in Weimar, who after hearing the 14-year-old play, invited him to a soiree in his home. Pianistic studies with Franz Lachner in Munich followed. He began his career aged 18, travelling as a concert pianist through half of Germany.

In 1877 he was called to Amsterdam, to teach piano at the music school. Between 1878 and 1885 he repeatedly met Brahms, and in 1884 played his 2nd piano concerto under the composer's direction. In 1883 Röntgen co-founded the Amsterdam conservatoire, as well as supporting the creation of the 'Amsterdamer Concertgebouw'. Years of intensive composing, primarily chamber music, followed; he also enjoyed considerable success as 'accompanist' of violinist Carl Flesch and cellist Pablo Casals. During this time he became a friend of Edvard Grieg, whom he often visited in Bergen; and Grieg was a frequent guest in Amsterdam, where he also performed at the Concertgebouw. After Grieg's death in 1907, Röntgen took care of his friend's musical estate and wrote his biography.

In 1919 he became a Dutch citizen. For many years he had a piano trio with two of his sons. Retiring in 1924, he settled in Bilthoven near Utrecht, where his architect son Frants built him the country house Gaudeamus. In this seclusion he wrote well over 100 works, many yet unpublished, including 21 symphonies. In 1928 he visited his son Engelbert in New York, who was first cellist in the Metropolitan Opera. Here he met and was greatly impressed by George Gershwin. The works of his last years were strongly influenced by jazz. He also experimented with atonal music and wrote a bitonal symphony. Julius Röntgen died in Utrecht on 13th September 1932. Today his villa Gaudeamus is the seat of the Gaudeamus Society, a society for modern Dutch music.
