Karel Komzák was born on 8th November 1850 in Prague, where his father Karel (1823-1893) worked as teacher, organist, capellmeister and quite successful composer. It was he who introduced his son to music. From 1861 on, he studied at the Prague conservatory, his violin teachers being Mildner and Benewitz. After this he played in his father's orchestra (to which Dvorák belonged for a time), until he became theatre director in Linz in 1870 and military capellmeister in Innsbruck in 1871. After 1884 Komzák lived and worked in Vienna, while also holding the post of spa capellmeister in nearby Baden. It was there that, on 23nd April 1905, he lost his wife while trying to board a rain as it was leaving. Like his father, Karel Komzák wrote a lot of dance music, marches, Potpurris and waltzes, particularly for salon orchestra. His works have an Austrian-Slav sonority, while his rich melodic and rhythmic imagination is nourished by Czech folk music. Apart from an operetta Edelweis, numerous songs and genre pieces, it is mainly his brilliant ensemble-arrangements which, still today, are an irreplaceable part of the repertoire of spa orchestras. His Volksliedchen und Märchen (folk song and fairytale) are perfect examples of the sort of quietly reflective music that serious musicians can still enjoy with a clear conscience.
