Shortly after the triumphant permiere on 5 April 1874 of what is still Johann Strauss's best known operetta, 'Die Fledermaus', the composer set off on an Italian concert tour scheduled to last for several weeks. He was received with great enthusiasm at a total of twenty-one concerts in the most important cities and towns of northern Italy, for instance at La Scala in Milan. The band he had at his disposal was the German orchestra of Musikdirektor Julius Langenbach from Elberfeld, which Strauss had conducted a year before at the World Exhibition in Vienna. The waltz 'Wo die Citronen blüh'n' (Where Lemon Trees are blooming) he composed especially for this tour. The title was taken from the famous poem 'Mignon's Song' from Goethe's novel 'Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship' ('Knowst thou the land where the lemon trees bloom?') The waltz is one of Strauss's absolute masterpieces. Its gloriously long-drawn-out introductory section is amongst the best of its kind in his whole oeuvre. Although it is followed by three distinct waltzes, Strauss used repetitions and skilfully composed bridge passages to create the effect of a large-scale throughcomposed tone poem, with the romantic and dreamy mood of the introduction returning in the coda.
