Mozart is thought to have written his Sonata K292 (196c) in Munich in about 1775. The original manuscript is lost so the unusual scoring, for bassoon and cello, of the first printed edition can only be assumed to be the composer's original intention. He may well have conceived it as a bassoon sonata with continuo, and it has also been published more recently in this form, but it is probably most frequently played as a duet for two bassoons, and is a satisfying and substantial work. this arrangement by Geoffrey Emerson now makes it available to clarinettists, and the alternative second part for bassoon has been adapted by Russell Denwood, making a valuable addition to the meagre repertoire for this popular combination.
