The duets of this present edition are taken from a collection of madrigals by Luzzaschi, printed in 1601, Madrigali.... per cantare e sonare a uno, e doi, e tre soprani, Roma, 1601. It is clear from the composer's dedication of the volume to the Cardinal Aldobrandini, that he intended it as a posthumous homage to the 'rare and singular' music of the court before Alfonso's death (in 1597), and in which he claims that he played an important part. Some if not all of these works may have been composed for the concerto delle donne, and formed part of the musica secreta. This would explain their being held back from publication until the duke's private concerts ceased to be held. Their eventual publication in Rome may have been secured during Luzzaschi's visit to Rome in 1601, where he went as part of the Cardinal's retinue.
