Productomschrijving

François-René Gebauer, born on 15 March 1773 in Versailles, is the second oldest of four extraordinarily gifted brothers whose father came from a German musical family that, like Gluck and Stamitz, rose to prominence in France during the second part of the 18th century. He received his first lessons from his brother Michel Joseph, born in 1763, then from François Devienne. In 1788 we find him as a bassoonist in the band of the Swiss Guards; in 1791, following the Revolution, he joined the National Guard. From 1795 to 1802 he also taught at the Paris Conservatoire. From 1802 to 1826 he was a bassoonist in the Paris Opera orchestra, and in 1825 was recalled as teacher at the Conservatoire. Simultaneously, he was chamber musician in the imperial, later royal, orchestra up to the July 1830 revolution. He died in Paris on 28 July 1845, “famous for having been one of the most fertile composers for his instrument”. Like his three brothers, he was adept at cultivating the period’s new style galant, heavily influenced by the works of Joseph Haydn. His output is almost entirely for bassoon. He wrote 13 concertos for his instrument, as well as eight Symphonies concertantes for flute, bassoon and orchestra. He enriched chamber music with wind quintets, quartets for 2 clarinets, horn and bassoon (op. 10), for flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon (op. 20), trios for clarinet or oboe, flute and bassoon (op.29 and 32), trios for clarinet, bassoon and horn (op.2), beside the charming 6 Nocturnes concertants for harp and bassoon. There are also numerous duos with clarinet, oboe or flute and, of course, for 2 bassoons. His “Etudes pour le Basson” and “Méthode pour le basson” testify to his teaching experience. Our edition of the three trios follows the undated first print of the parts from ca. 1810, titled: “Trois / TRIOS / Pour Flûte, Violon et Basse / COMPOSÉS PAR / F. R. GEBAUER. / Musicien de l’Opéra et de la Chapelle de S. M. / Œuvre 39. Prix f 50e. / à Paris / Chez SIEBER, Editeur et Md. de Musique .... / 352 [Pl.-No.]” The Trios show how thoroughly Gebauer familiarized himself with the development and techniques of wind instruments. In these tuneful pieces, which give “equal rights” to each instrument, he skillfully combines the German with the French taste as exemplified by Gossec and Catel.
