Productomschrijving

Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, valued 'compositeur à la mode' and one of the most prolific composers of his time, knew how to offer his appreciative clientèle music that combined art 'light in content' with esprit, while also writing musically and technically demanding works. He was far more than an old hand at the top of his powers (and his business!).

The six Suites op. 35, presented here in a version for treble recorder and basso continuo, show him at the height of his powers. The charm of these pieces lies in their felicitous fusion of French and Italian ornaments, particularly evident in the Préludes. Written originally for transverse flute, here they are transposed to treble recorder-friendly keys: Suites I, IV to VI a minor third upward, Suites II and III a fourth higher. Players should make the most of the resulting new sonority. Boismortier, of whose youth and musical training we know nothing, was born on 23 December 1689 in Thionville. In 1700 he moved to Metz, lived in Nancy and Lunéville from 1709 to 1715, and then worked in Perpignan and - from about 1722 - in Paris. He died on 28 October 1755 in Roissy-en- Brie. He wrote inventively for almost every genre, from the ballet opera to motets, cantatas and a wealth of instrumental pieces for every kind of combination.

His 6 Sonatas op. 34 for 3 flutes above a bass, now a mainstay of the quadro repertoire (Amadeus BP 2571û2576), are particularly noteworthy. Their full baroque sound, rich in polyphony and imitations, render them an ideal festive introduction to concerts. We have him to thank for freeing chamber music from the closed court circle (despite the enduring 'Privilège du Roy') and introducing it into middle class homes. He showed great skill in subordinating the folklore of the period to his inspiration. Boismortier's Suiten op. 35 first appeared in 1731 as a set of parts. The basso part is lavishly figured.
