'Good instrumental duets, particularly for the flute, are à still rare commodities', wrote the Musikalische Korrespondenz in 1791. The reviewer goes on to observe that 'gentle and pleasant' are chiefly properties of the flute, but that Hoffmeister's intention is apparently 'to demonstrate the agility of his fingers and tongue and the power of his lungs'. A facsimile of that review is reproduced in the foreword to this edition. Time ultimately superseded the criticism that was prompted by Hoffmeister's new style, by which time Mozart wrote such leaps and bounds at the beginning of his D major concerto.
'Gute Instrumentalduetten, insonderheit für die Flöte sind à noch immer seltene Produkte' schreef de Musikalische Korrespondenz in 1791. Dan volgt de constatering dat het 'sanfte und angenehme' vooral eigenschappen van de fluit zijn maar dat Hoffmeister erop uit lijkt te zijn om de speler vooral 'die Fertigkeit seiner Finger und Zunge und die Stärke seiner Lunge' te laten demonstreren. Een facsimile van deze recensie is in het voorwoord van deze uitgave afgedrukt. De kritiek die voortkwam uit Hoffmeisters nieuwe manier van schrijven is uiteindelijk door de tijd ingehaald. Zo schreef ook Mozart dit soort sprongen in het begin van zijn D groot concert.
