Students parts are written in 5-finger position (except for Silent Night, which requires a slight shift in the left hand). For ease in reading, the single-line melody is divided between the hands and is written on the grand staff. Only simple rhytjms are found in the carols, which also contains lyrics for singing. Duet parts are for the teacher or a more advanced player, and they appeal to developing students. The Refreshing jazz harmonies in teh accompaniments complement the melodies while providing rhythmic support. Among the various styles are swing bass (Up on the Housetop), Latin (God rest ye Merry, Gentlemen), Jazz Waltz (we Wish you a Merry Christmas), ballad (Silent Night) and pop (Angel we have hear on high).
