Albania is divided into twenty-six regions, and each has its own folk music tradition. These dances come from Kukës, the region of the Composer’s exile, and therefore must have a special significance for him. Aleksandër Lalo (b.1948) is an Albanian composer. He began to teach himself music when he was ten years old. He became the conductor of the circus band in Tirana when he was sixteen. After studying agriculture at the university he took private lessons in harmony and orchestration and won a place at the Conservatoire where he studied composition. His main output is of light music, songs and music for films. After the 1971 Festival of Song he was accused of being too modern, and sent into internal exile in Kukës, Northern Albania, for ‘re-education’. The entire town of Kukës was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a hydro-electric power station, and it is said that Lalo was the last citizen to leave before demolition began. In 1980 he was allowed to return to Tiranë as the composer for the Variety Theatre.
