Antonio Lotti wirkte fast sein ganzes Leben lang am Markusdom in Venedig, ließ sich aber 1717 für zwei Jahre als Opernkomponist an den sächsischen Hof nach Dresden locken. Eine Partitur seines Kyrie in g und seines Gloria in G, vereint unter dem Titel Missa Sapientiae, fand man später im Nachlass des Dresdner Hofkomponisten Jan Dismas Zelenka.
Doch nicht nur Zelenka begeisterte sich für die Messe, (mindestens) zwei weitere illustre Komponisten ließen sich Kopien anfertigen: Johann Sebastian Bach und Georg Friedrich Händel. In der Tat: Die Messe ist ein großartiges Stück im konzertierenden Stil der Zeit mit einem brillanten und zugleich warmen Streicherklang (2 Violinen und 2 Bratschen).

Antonio Lotti was employed at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice for almost his entire life. In 1717, however, he was lured for two years to Dresden by the Saxon court as a composer of operas. A score of his Kyrie in G minor and his Gloria in G major, combined under the title Missa Sapientia, was found amongst the personal belongings of Dresden court composer Jan Dismas Zelenka.
Zelenka was not the only one person impressed by the Mass: at least two other illustrious composers had copies made, namely Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Indeed, the Mass is a magnificent piece, following the concertante style of the time, with a brilliant yet warm string sound (2 violins and 2 violas).
Carus is now publishing a vocal score of this work for the first time, complementing the previously available full score with performance materials and choral score.
