Productomschrijving

The enchanting and enjoyable Rondoletto is one of only a few works in this scoring from romantic times, and therefore a welcome addition to the oboe repertoire. A pastoral introduction is followed by a sprightly Rondo-Allegro with a characteristic, rhythmically arresting motif. The source used was the undated first print of the parts, titled: 'RONDOLETTO / pour l' / Hautbois / avec Accompagnement de / deux Violons, Viola at Violoncelle / composé et dedié / à Monsieur W. Czervenka / l'ainé / par son ami / LOUIS MAURER. / Oeuvre 43 / A Leipsic, chez Frederic Hofmeister. / 1162 [Plate No.]. ' The little cadenza suggested before the Allegro is by the editor. Ludwig Wilhelm Maurer was born in Potsdam on 8 February 1789. Having received an early training as a violinist, he appeared successfully in public in Berlin at the age of thirteen. From 1803 on he was a member of the Berlin court orchestra, but the disorders of war made him travel to Russia in 1806, where he met Baillot and Rode in Riga. Having reached Moscow, Maurer, at Baillot's recommendation, became conductor of Count Vsevolozhsky's orchestra. He remained in this post, which gave him ample opportunity for composing, until 1817. There followed years of travelling, and in 1824 he was appointed concertmaster in Hannover. After 1813 he again took up his post with Count Vsevolozhsky, now in Petersburg. From 1841 to 1862 Maurer held the post of inspector of the imperial orchestra and from 1841 to 1871 also conducted the symphony concerts of the Concert Society. His contemporaries describe him as a cultured and hard-working man. Maurer died on 25 October 1878 in Petersburg. Maurer was one of the best German violinists of his time. His beautifully varied sound and technical brillance were much praised. His concerti and chamber music show him as the born virtuoso, already acquainted with almost all violinistic techniques of the pre-Paganini era. They already reach beyond Spohr. Still today, violinists draw profit from the passages for string changes, the techniques of interval skips and complicated triple and quadruple stops presented in his special studies such as the Etudes ou Caprices op. 39. Authors of our day are skilled at continuing Maurer's passagework in their methods. 9 Concerti, several Concertini, works of variations and fantasies for violin show Maurer's feeling for rhythmical and particularly for sound effects, for varied harmony within a flawless formal setting. His Concertante for four violins and orchestra, op. 55, 'a well-known composition of solid design and exemplary writing for the instrument, famous as a specialty and exstremely effective', was long considered his masterpiece par excellence, and played by the eminent violinists of his day.
