Charles Bochsa life data are only hard from the technical literature to find out. Some sources give his date of birth at 1760. Where he received his education is unknown. At first he seemed to have served as oboist in an armed forces regiment before he changed to the Gran Theatre of Lyon as oboist. His son Robert was born in Montemedy on August 9th, 1789. He became a famous harp virtuoso later. Charles Bochsa seems to be changed to a similar employment after his Lyon employment to Bordeaux. He came 1806 to Paris to set up with his music trade and music publisher in the Rue Vivienne No.25. Here he also publishes his own compositions.
He calls himself on the prints Charles Bochsa Père to the distinction of his son. He composed quartets for clarinet, quartets for oboe and string trio, duos for 2 oboes as well as two schools, a Methode de flute avec des airs and a Methode de clarinette. Bochsa dies 1821 in Paris.
The work Petits Airs / en Quatuor/ ou Serenade / Pour Flute, Hautbois ou Clarinette, Cor et Basson /composés et dédiés / aus Amateurs / par / Ch.les Bochsa Père / 2.e Suite Qeuvre 31 was published by Bochsa himself at 1815. The part of the oboe also can be played by a clarinet without problems (in C).
