With the present Serenata for solo viola and string trio Cesare Pugni, one the most eminent grandmasters of classical ballet, has given all quartet violists a musical delicacy, which as an encore (complete or as individual movements) is sure to amuse and entertain a discerning audience. It is one of those genre pieces that ooze melodious charm, while elegantly refraining from compositional profundity. We present the piece according to the undated first print of the parts from c. 1835, titled: SERENATA / Per Viola obbligata / con accompa. 2da. Viola Violino e Violoncello / COMPOSTA E DEDICATA / all'Jllmo. Sigr. Conte / Giulio Barbò / DAL Mo. / Cesare Pugni / MILANO. / Presso FR. LUCCA Editore di musica Ca. Sa. Margherita / No. 1131 Cesare Pugni was born in Genua on 31st May 1802, the son of a watchmaker. He studied composition at the conservatoire in Milan, while also training as a violinist. He soon developed a passion for composing ballets, first, from 1823, writing for the Milan Scala. Meyerbeer and Glinka were most impressed by Pugni's 1830 Sinfonia per una o due orchestre, dedicated to Alessandro Rolla. In 1834 he went to Paris where, together with the choreographer Louis Henry, he first worked at the Paris opera, then with Jules Perrot at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. There were further productions in Berlin, Vienna and Triest, before he was called to Petersburg in 1851, where he developed a wide range of activities at the Imperial Theatre with such celebrated ballet masters as Jules Joseph Perrault and Marius Petipa. Although by the mid-nineteenth century Russian operas were already being staged in Russian cities, Italian compositions still featured prominently on programmes. Pugni wrote some 35 works for the Petersburg Theatre. Beside 312 ballets, 40 masses and little chamber music, he left 10 operas, of which the balletic operas 'Esmeralda', 'Katharina', 'Die Najade und der Fischer', 'Das Zauberpferd' and 'Le Roi Candaule' (1868) were still being performed in recent times. The extraordinary popularity of his works earned him the title of 'official ballet composer' of the Mariinsky Theatre. Cesare Pugni died in St. Petersburg on 26th January 1870.
