The Dutch composer Julius Roentgen was a musician who not only played an important part in the Netherlands' musical life, but also enjoyed great reputation as a pianist as well as an accompanist all over Europe. He was the first Dutch person who played Brahms' 2nd piano concerto under the composers' baton. Julius Roentgen was one of the founders of the Amsterdam Conservatory and between 1912 and 1924 its director. It was he, who recommended to the architect of the "Concertgebouw" to take the Old Gewandhaus of Leipzig as a model, because of its legendary acoustics. As son of the Dutch violinist Engelbert Roentgen (1829-1897), who was the leader of the Gewandhausorchester, Julius was born on 9th of May 1855 in Leipzig. Aged 20, he took a post as piano teacher at the Amsterdam school of music. Only 1924 he left this town, in order to move to the "Villa Gaudeamus" in Bilthoven, built by his son Frants, where he died on 13th of September 1932. The huge number of 650 compositions makes him one of the most prolific Dutch composers. Taught in the Leipzig tradition of Mendelssohn and Schumann he developed into a romantic composer. The closest affinity his work has, is the one to Brahms, whom he admired very much.
