Music for me is a language, and language is 'a stock of signs and symbols in the possession of an idiomatic community'. The contemporary musical language is fundamentally generated from aesthetic bans (not to say that it has been 'shrunk' by those bans). Therefore, it becomes increasingly a remnant of an intellectual community that grows ever so slightly smaller. For each work a new language is invented - 'after all, one is not allowed to repeat oneself'. But who can keep up with the pace required for learning those innumerable languages? We have almost lost the communal stock of signs and symbols, the language, which is the basis for communication. Duration: 20 min. (H. Schmidinger)
