Friedrich August Kummer was born on the 5th of August 1797 in Meiningen, the son of an oboist. He first learnt to play the oboe, then became a violoncello pupil of Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer. In 1814 he joined the Dresden state orchestra as oboist, until three years later a position as cellist fell vacant. He had to wait until 1850, and Dotzauer's retirement, to occupy the post of solo cellist, which he held up to 1864. He spent the last fifteen years of his life teaching, both privately and at the Dresden Conservatory. Kummer died in Dresden on the 22nd of August 1879.A prolific compser and transcriber, he wrote Concerti, Concertini, numerous Paraphrases and Caprices for his instrument, besides instructive Duets of varying difficulty, studies and much elegant und tasteful light music. Kummer's playing was much praised; according to Fürstenau, his sound was of an absolute beauty, free of any material additive, uniform in all positions, very effective, particularly on the lower strings. According to Wasielewski his reserved nature led him more to solid musicianship than to brilliant virtuosity. Following his 4 Duos op. 103 with the celebrated Bolero (Amadeus BP 2412), we present here his instructive and easy 2 Duos with Capriccio op. 33, ideal for teaching purposes.
