Product description

Joseph-François Garnier, born on 18 January 1755 in Lauris (Provence), was one of the famous oboists in the musical world of Paris. A pupil of Antoine Sallantins, he was active in the Paris opera as second oboist from 1778 and as first oboist from 1785. After 1784 Garnier also played in the Chapelle Royale, and later as soloist in the Concert Spirituel. He was praised for his exceptional virtuosity along with extremely agreeable cantabile playing. From 1793 to 1797 he lectured as professor at the Paris Conservatoire. Having lost all these posts during the Revolution, he managed to find employment as a Commissaire ordonnateur in the Franconian Rhine army. In this position he performed in Kreutzer's Concerts in Frankfurt, as well as in Offenbach, the town in which publisher André, following the first edition by Pleyel in Paris, published his famous oboe method in French and German. Having meanwhile been assigned to an Italian army corps, he also travelled to Rome and Naples. After leaving the army he withdrew to his native village of Lauris. He died on 31 March 1825 in Paris. Garnier composed almost exclusively for the oboe. Besides oboe concertos, he left a Concertante for 2 oboes and orchestra, purely oboe duos, duos for oboe and bassoon, oboe and clarinet, and oboe and violin. Garnier's oboe method ('Méthode raisonnée pour le haut-bois') was never recognized by the Paris Conservatoire as an 'official method', despite the fact it circulated widely in numerous reprints (including shorter extracts from André), and saw its attached exercise pieces reused in other 19th century teaching aids. The method is aimed at 'beginners, pupils and professional oboists wishing to improve their abilities'. A special feature of Garnier's method is its comprehensive collection of studies and didactically well thought out pieces, from which we have taken the 6 Sonatas for oboe and bass instrument, and which provide valuable insights into oboe teaching in the 18th and 19th centuries. In all the pieces, Garnier uses 'moderate' keys for oboe playing on contemporary instruments, hardly ever going beyond three accidentals; both technically and musically, the pieces are therefore also ideally suited to 21st century oboe teaching. The present edition follows the first print of Garnier's 'Méthode Raisonnée', published around 1798 in Paris by Pleyel. Dynamics are lacking the the print, in score form. Their tasteful addition, in accordance with movement headings, is left to the performers. Philipp Kreyenbühl
