Die wichtigste Quelle für Bachs Cellosuiten stellt eine Abschrift seiner Ehefrau Anna Magdalena dar, denn ein Autograph ist nicht überliefert. Wie weitere Abschriften zeigen, bietet der eigentliche Notentext kaum Probleme. Die Bogensetzung jedoch, für Streichinstrumente besonders wichtig, ist sehr ungenau und zwingt den Herausgeber zu schwierigen Entscheidungen. Unsere Spielausgabe, HN 666, ist zweiteilig angelegt. Sie bietet einerseits die Urtextedition – mit Vorwort und Kommentarteil – und eine eingerichtete praktische Stimme.
Die zusätzlich vorgelegte Studien-Edition (HN 9666) gibt die Urtextstimme wieder, jedoch erweitert um eine Reproduktion der Abschrift Anna Magdalenas. So können sich jeder Cellist und alle Liebhaber dieser Werke selbst ein Bild von der vieldiskutierten Problemlage machen.
The most important source for Bach’s Cello Suites is a copy made by his wife Anna Magdalena because the autograph is no longer extant. As further copies show, the actual musical text is scarcely problematic. However, the slurs, which are particularly important for string instruments, are very inexact and compel the editor to make difficult decisions. Our practical edition, HN 666, is in two parts. It not only offers the Urtext edition – with preface and critical commentary – but also a part for playing.
The additional study score (HN 9666) contains the Urtext part, but in addition offers a reproduction of Anna Magdalena’s copy. This means that both cellists and music lovers alike are able to form their own opinion about the much discussed problems.
