The title of this short piano piece, Ancestral Voices, is taken from Coleridge’s famous poem, "Kubla Khan," and some of the imagery in the poem is the inspiration for the work. It is not programmatic; rather it is an attempt to evoke some of the atmosphere of the poem: in the same way that some of the images are repeated throughout the poem (“caverns measureless to man”, “caves of ice”), episodes of the music are varied to create a form that reflects the shape of the poem itself.

Some of the images that led me are:

-         A stately pleasure-dome
-         Through caverns measureless to man
-         a sunless sea
-         sinuous rills
-         chasm…..A savage place!
-         By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
-         ceaseless turmoil seething
-         A mighty fountain momently was forced:
-         Huge fragments vaulted
-         a lifeless ocean
-         Ancestral voices prophesying war!
-         And on her dulcimer she played,
-         For he on honey-dew hath fed / And drunk the milk of Paradise.
