With his splendid, quite virtuosic Chaconne op. 8 and the endearing and unaffected Petitesse Feuillet d'Album op. 2/2, Henri Marteau has given us two precious contributions to the rare literature for viola and piano. The Chaconne first appeared in 1905, published by N. Simrock in Berlin and dedicated to Théophile Laforge, viola professor at the Conservatoire de Paris (1863-1918). The undated recital pieces op. 2/1-3 for violin or viola respectively avec accompagnement de piano were published in 1907 by the Süddeutschen Musikverlag in Strasbourg. Where articulation and ornaments are concerned, the composer prepared the prints most carefully for performance.
