Product description

There are at least 65 Quadri works for three melody instruments above a bass extant by Telemann. He himself published four sets of six quartets, including the highly regarded 12 Paris quartets, besides three quartets in his famous Tafelmusik. The remaining Quadri are extant in the form of copies by copyists, usually in single part form. The variety of scoring, inventiveness and zest for experimentation lavished by Telemann on this genre are admirable. He did not 'overlook' a single instrument in use at the time; even the trumpet and the horn were included. He was particularly partial to the viola da gamba, an instrument which is at present making a remarkable comeback. There are as many as 16 quartets by Telemann where it participates in the melodic discourse. We have edited the present Concerto in G major (TWV 43:G6) according to an undated contemporary copy of the score, kept by the Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek in Darmstadt under shelfmark Mus. ms. 1033/5. The 4-page manuscript, with 6 staves per page, is headed 'Concerto. Flauto, Oboe, Violino e Basso del Sigre Telemann.' The flute part is written in French clef, implying the use of a treble recorder. A contemporary set of parts (shelfmark Mus. ms. 1042/88) has also been consulted for comparative purposes. The separate title reads: 'SONATA. / à / Flauto dolce / Oboe / Violino / et / Cembalo. / di / Telemann.' [Incipit]. The piece is thought to date from around 1725. Both copies lack dynamics. Articulations feature only in the copy of the parts. The basso part in the handwritten score is figured; the basso part headed 'Cembalo' is unfigured. The realization of the continuo, easy to play, is intended as a suggestion, and is hopefully 'true to Telemann'.
