This new arrangement for song and piano of Luisa Miller by Jeffrey Kallberg is published as part of the critical edition of the works of Giuseppe Verdi (The University of Chicago Press and Ricordi). The edition is based on the autograph held in Ricordi's Historical Archives. Luisa Miller met with great success on its first performance (Naples, the San Carlo Theatre, 8th December 1849), so much so that the critics of the time saw this new work as marking Verdi's second period. The variant of this autograph, as well as being faithfully reproduced in the edition, has been reconstructed, where possible, by considering the smallest details found in the original versions in the Annex: the original version of Luisa's cantabile "Tu puniscimi, o Signore". The historical introduction not only describes the events in Verdi's life and art leading up to the composition of this work and its first performance, but also provides an interesting section on Verdi's dramatic composition and some indications as to Verdi's style and the theatrical practices of the time. The edition is completed with a broad critical comment.
