Der Erstverleger nannte sie 'das größte musikalische Kunstwerk aller Zeiten und Völker'. Wie kein anderes Vokalwerk J. S. Bachs hat die h-Moll-Messe noch im 18. Jahrhundert eine ungewöhnlich weitgestreute Verbreitung erfahren, bevor sie - über 80 Jahre nach dem Tod des Komponisten - erstmals gedruckt vorlag. Die jüngste kritische Edition erschien 1954 in der Neuen Bach-Ausgabe. Mehr als 40 Jahre nach dieser nicht unumstrittenen Ausgabe von Friedrich Smend legt jetzt der renommierte Bachforscher Christoph Wolff bei C. F. Peters eine Edition des prominenten Werkes nach neuester Quellenforschung vor.
