Product description

In our teaching, we have noticed again and again that there is a distinct lack of instructional material focussing specifically on piano improvisation. Every teacher who has delved into the area of improvisation certainly has his or her own ideas on the subject, but we believe it is essential to present the pupil with specific tasks and concrete materials to work with. After all, nothing is more restrictive than absolute freedom. Instructions such as "just play something in A minor" are unlikely to produce much success, especially if the pupil has no previous experience with improvisation. Like music in general, "improvisation is something rather difficult to get a handle on". When practising, say, a Mozart sonata, the pupil has before him bits of paper covered with conventional musical notation and filled with information about tempo, metre, musical structures and style, and the piece has a definite background in terms of music theory and history, all of which makes the piece much easier to grasp. It is this very kind of comprehensible information (presented in a clear, graphic form which the pupil can take home with him) is what we want to supply to everyone with the desire to improvise. We believe that our approach requires and promotes a different kind of creativity, concentration and listening. While pupils normally play pieces that are already "finished", with this approach they participate in the development of the piece themselves. Conventional "how to improvise" methods often limit themselves to certain styles (such as jazz or Baroque). Our idea is to explore the subject of improvisation without being hemmed in by stylistic boundaries, and to offer pieces that can be used in a variety of ways in individual or group piano instruction.musicmatters is a collection of improvisation games for piano.
