The Ragtime Flute is a project (in two volumes) conceived by composer, John Polhamus and flautist, Rachel Smith. 'These compositions in the style of Classical Ragtime were begun as an experiment in convenience, but have resulted in a felicitously successful combination. They were written to maximize the melodic and rhythmic possibilities of two available instruments in the music and the style of the turn of the 20th century. The piano parts are largely as written in the originals, while the flute provides both a descant-like counter-melody, and a syncopated harmonic accompaniment.' (John Polhamus)
