The source of our present Sonata in B flat major (FaWV N:B2) by Johann Friedrich Fasch is a contemporary copy of parts kept by the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden under shelfmark Mus. 2423-Q-11. The separate title page, with the incipit of the Largo’s theme in the first oboe, is strangely marked: Schranck No: II. / 9. Fach 14. Lage. / No: 3: Trio / co VV.ni Oboi, Viola / e Basso. / 4 St: / del Sig.r Fasch. / [Incipit]. Yet the individual parts, beside Sonata, are headed Oboe Primo, Oboe Secondo, Bassono and Cembalo respectively. The harpsichord part is unfigured. The copyist’s manuscript is most carefully done, with matching articulations and expression marks.
