Product description

Amongst the numerous composers of the 19th century who were forgotten over time is Richard Hofmann, born on the 30th April 1844 in Delitzsch as the son of the local town music director. According to the Riemann music lexicon (1959) he studied from 1859-1863 in Leipzig with the second concert master of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Felix Raimund Dreyschock (1824-1869) and functioned as a violinist in Berlin orchestras. From 1866 onwards he was in Leipzig again as a member of the Euterpe- orchestra. Here he took classes with Salomon Jadassohn (1831- 1902), the director of the orchestra und settled down as a music teacher. From 1880-1883 he conducted the Singakademie. In 1904 he became a teacher at the conservatory. Amongst his works are numerous, mostly instructive compositions for piano, strings and winds, several instructive works for varying orchestra instruments as well as "Die Musikinstrumente, ihre Beschreibung und Verwendung" ("The Musical Instruments, their Description and Use"). Hofmann died on November 13th 1918 in Leipzig. The Four Pieces for Oboe with Accompaniment by the Pianoforte were published 1892 by Kistner in Leipzig and are dedicated to Gustav Hinke. In opposition to the most virtuosic solo works of romanticism they are well suited for teaching.
